A South African drug company has been fined $1.2 million for selling fake Viagra online, which has been used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Pharmaceutical firm Viagra bought fake versions of the drug Viagra in the South African market on Monday and posted them on its website after receiving a warning from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The MHRA said it was investigating claims that the product contained "substance impurities", which could cause "incorrect dosages or failure to report them".
A statement from Pfizer said: "Pharmaceutical firm Viagra (Sildenafil) has been engaged in a lengthy investigation of these counterfeit erectile dysfunction drugs and has received a report from the MHRA and regulatory agencies. It is clear that the products contained in these counterfeit erectile dysfunction drugs are counterfeit. The products are often fake and contain substances which could have serious health consequences for individuals."
In a statement, Pfizer said it was "engaged in extensive investigations into the sale and marketing of the products" which were "not genuine" and "results in the products being promoted to consumers".
The statement said the company was aware of the case and "has acted responsibly and responsibly in handling these products".
Pfizer said: "The MHRA is aware of the risks associated with the product and has acted responsibly in handling the cases."
The product has been manufactured in India under the trade name Viagra. The MHRA has received a notification from the US FDA which was sent to the product's manufacturer from India.
TheMUMBILE PHARMACYsaid that it had received an enquiry from thefrom India after a company manufactured the product without a licence from the MHRA.said the product was being sold under the name Viagra from India.
A notification from the MHRA from India said: "The product, which was manufactured in India under the trade name Viagra, was manufactured and supplied to the UK from India under the trade name Sildenafil."
